What is coaching?

Coaching is about navigating a path from a current state that feels unsatisfactory or causes suffering to a desired state.

To my clients I offer a safe space, active listening and unconditional support, as well as demanding questioning infused with empathy and humour, aiming at clarifying the true objectives underlying their request.

They are responsible for their own choices, and it's my role to ensure respect for the framework, to open up possibilities, provide fresh perspectives and set challenges that propel them toward their truth and goals.

As a coach, I accompany your project of change and evolution by co-creating with you the conditions to

  • strengthen your skills

  • re-activate and/or develop your resources

  • choose behaviors that are most aligned with your deepest intentions.

This involves a demanding, structured and time-framed process centred around one or more tangible objectives. The concepts of exchange, dialogue and above all questioning are at the heart of this process. As a coach, I will not advise you to make one decision over another, nor will I offer miraculous solutions. My role can be compared to that of a catalyst enabling transformations. Or even to a mirror: by reflecting you, I somehow reveal you to yourself, while offering a broader perspective, unveiling new horizons.

The success of coaching will largely depend on your determination to bring forth what is essential for you and to step out of your comfort zone. This requires both courage, humility and trust.

Coaching: for what and for whom?

Experience is not what happens to you, it's what you do with what happens to you.

Aldous Huxley

I offer coaching services in four main areas for which I am specifically trained:

When someone becomes seriously ill or dependent, itʼs the whole family, friends and social environment that is affected, to varying degrees.

Whether you are suffering from an illness or caring for a loved one, you are going through a major existential crisis whose impact is often unrecognized.

Specific support can be very beneficial for you and those around you.

When your life feels cramped,

if you no longer feel the impetus to take on new projects,

if you want to make a major change in your life but don't know how to go about it,

coaching can help you overcome your blockages and achieve a new, more satisfying balance.

We can't fail to communicate, whether through words, intonations, gestures, facial expressions... Even our silences speak volumes. But communication is also the most difficult art of all, often leading to misunderstandings and miscommunication despite the best will in the world.

To communicate better with others, it's essential to first get to know yourself better and become aware of your own internal dialogues.

Coaching can help you get there.

In my work with people from immigrant backgrounds and the forced exile experienced by refugees, I have observed that most of the time, we experience the same basic needs and share the same values. What can change are the ways in which we live and express them.

Conflict, rejection and exclusion are often the result of ignorance and fear of the other, leading to judgmental behavior. This is as true of new arrivals as it is of the resident population.

One of the keys to breaking out of this vicious circle is to be open to difference, to recognize fear and choose to overcome it, so as to live and work better together.

Support during a medical crisis

My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.

Maya Angelou

Are you:
  • experiencing acute or chronic stress because you are caring for a sick, disabled, demented, elderly family member...?
  • dealing with a recent diagnosis of a serious illness?
  • suffering from a chronic or invisible illness?
  • returning to work after a long sick leave?
  • a healthcare professional feeling constantly at the edge of what you can give or endure?
I can offer you specific support aimed at helping you regain greater serenity and balance lost during these challenging times.
Taking care of my father during the last months of his life while also looking after my distraught mother left me overwhelmed by everything coming my way. Over the months, I became increasingly irritable, ineffective, and desperate. Seeking support during this difficult period allowed me to feel grounded again and keep my head above water. I regained my ability to act with a clear mind while becoming emotionally present for both others and myself.

Together, we can work on:

  • acknowledging and managing your emotions while removing their blocking capacity
  • clarifying issues and priorities
  • exploring new perspectives and developing new resources
  • defining relevant goals and an action plan that respects your needs as well as those of your loved ones
  • initiating a change process aligned with your values
  • improving communication with your loved ones and healthcare professionals.

Personal & professional development

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't – you're absolutely right.

Henry Ford

The aim of personal and professional development coaching is to help you define motivating and meaningful goals, and map out the path to reach them.

Through working with me, you will be able to:

  • refocus on your core values
  • clarify your personal vision and life goals
  • define professional goals that are consistent with your deepest aspirations and develop an action plan to achieve them
  • (re)gain confidence in yourself
  • develop your assertiveness
  • create balance across different areas of your life.

I embarked on coaching with the goal of strengthening my resilience and assertiveness in the context of political engagement.

This commitment represents a significant challenge for me, not devoid of doubts and fears that I wanted to overcome. Through the work we've done together, I've made significant progress. The fears have practically disappeared, though I've retained some doubts – but that's also part of growth, to question oneself. It's when doubts dominate the internal dialogue that they become detrimental rather than constructive. You've introduced me to useful tools to stop this self-denigration.

Intra- and interpersonal communication

Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

Oscar Wilde

Coaching in intra- and interpersonal communication aims to refine your understanding of your internal and external communication patterns:
  • what are typical phrases I repeat?
  • what do they express about my worldview, about how I see myself, and about how I see others?
  • what is the power of these words on me and on others?
  • are there repeating patterns, similar conflicts?
  • what can I/do I want to change in my way of listening and expressing myself to communicate more satisfactorily?
By becoming aware of counterproductive patterns and reflexes, you'll regain the freedom not to repeat them automatically. From there, you can access the freedom to consciously choose different modes of communication aligned with your deepest intentions. By learning to practice compassionate communication – listening and expressing yourself as truthfully as possible – you'll be able to navigate out of conflictual and/or frustrating situations and form more authentic relationships.

What has helped me most in moving forward, both personally and professionally, is learning to discover new perspectives, not remaining confined to my interpretation of what's happening. Thank you for introducing me to the drama triangle and making me aware of my role as a victim, so I could finally break free!

S.G.

Coaching has not only helped me progress in my political engagement but also on a personal level. I particularly discovered Nonviolent Communication (NVC), which I was unfamiliar with, both for speaking to others and to myself. It provides me with tools to analyze and understand my emotions in a given situation, allowing me to react in a constructive manner.

Intercultural communication

In life, nothing is to be feared, everything is to be understood.

Marie Curie

If you operate in an environment composed of people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, coaching can help you:

  • recognise and question your preconceptions about other cultures, different ways of doing or saying things
  • learn to decode the intentions of others beyond their behaviors and words
  • identify and highlight commonalities as bridges, rather than focusing on differences perceived as deficiencies or threats
  • forge more authentic, satisfying human relationships that are also more productive professionally.

As an individual, these realisations will guide you to express yourself and act in the most relevant way possible, finding your place and fostering inclusion rather than divisions and rejection.

Regarding businesses, especially in a multicultural country like Luxembourg where employers are desperately seeking “talents,” it is vital to develop a “resources and integration” oriented perspective, rather than perpetuating the traditional approach of viewing differences as shortcomings or deficits.

Thank you very much for your cooperation, which was what helped me the most at this difficult stage. When we talk, things look differently: your words are magical. You are the most understanding, cooperative and helpful person I met since I arrived in Luxembourg.

A.S.

About

Love is the source of light that illuminates life to its fullest.

Ariane Angeloglou

A passionate curiosity for the human being, their motivations, aspirations, and the relationships they forge with others, has been the guiding thread of my endeavours.

After completing dual studies in both science and literature (pre-medical studies, Master's degree in classical literature), I have continuously pursued further education in communication, counselling, and coaching.

Since 1995, I have conceived, coordinated, and supported projects with social and human impact, primarily in the fields of education, training, integration, and health.

In addition to my consulting work, my roles as a French teacher (2003-2013) and as Director of the Cancer Foundation (2014-2015) have provided invaluable hands-on experience.

Trained in coaching since 2011, I now prioritize this activity, accompanying individuals in their process of transitioning from a current state deemed unsatisfactory, sometimes leading to exhaustion, suffering, and conflicts, to a desired state that is more serene and fulfilling, aligned with their deepest personal values and motivations.

The values that guide me are authenticity, freedom, and responsibility, ensuring informed choices that lead towards a more fulfilled, serene, and joyful life, enriched by compassionate relationships and a keen awareness of the interdependence among all living beings within nature.

My approach

Misnaming things is to add to the world's unhappiness.

Albert Camus

Informed by inputs from various branches of knowledge, ranging from the humanities to life sciences, and marked by my personal life experience that has confronted me with existential questions such as anxiety, illness, and death, I adopt a person-centred approach, based on listening and questioning, within the framework of unconditionally constructive dialogue.

Coaching traditionally draws on the principles of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), developed in the 1970s in the United States by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. It has since been further developed by numerous contributors, notably Robert Dilts. The basic idea is to develop awareness of the language we use, the emotional and affective colouring brought by our five senses, and the beliefs underlying our reasoning. Through this observation framework, we become capable of recognising patterns of failure and success that are unique to us, ultimately allowing us to replicate our success patterns in order to bring about desired changes in our lives.

My coaching training, delivered by organizations accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), constitutes an important but not exclusive foundation of my approach.

I would recommend you as a coach without hesitation! Your kindness, professionalism, humour, the fact that you de-dramatise situations, the fact that you don't see things in black and white, that you don't take life too seriously and that you enjoy life! That stands out!

C.S.

Martine, you are an unparalleled support for me. When I doubted myself, you were always there to encourage me. Thank you for sharing positive energy with me. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for your unconditional support. Thank you for everything.
